Monroe Clifford Combs of 710 Osborne Fork Rd. Thousandsticks, KY born July 4, 1945 departed this life on Sunday April 20, 2014 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, KY. He was 68 years old. Monroe was born in Perry Co., Ky., the son of Mabel Phillips Combs Carroll & the late Lincoln Combs. Monroe was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served honorably in the United States Air Force. He was a retired coal miner having been employed by Cypress Coal Company & was currently employed by the Leslie Co. Detention Center, Hyden, Ky. Monroe was a member of the Hyden Lions Club and the Leslie Co. Quarterback Club. Monroe had a genuine passion for volunteering his time for various civic & county functions & especially the youth of Leslie Co. He & and his good friend, Larry Dixon, worked & cooked tirelessly & donated countless hours at many fund-raising events for the grade, middle, high schools & youth athletic organizations of Leslie County. He also cooked annually for the Mary Breckinridge Hospital at Mary Breckinridge Day & the Leslie Co. Fish and Game Club Wildlife Day. Monroe enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping & especially being involved in the lives of his family. Monroe was a devoted member of the Full Gospel Church of Jesus Christ, Smilax, Ky. & had been commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Monroe Combs was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Lincoln Combs, two sisters: Margaret Combs, Carol Jean Fugate, & one brother, John Henry Combs. Mr. Monroe Combs leaves the following relatives surviving: loving and devoted mother: Mabel Phillips Carroll of Smilax, Ky., his wife: Brenda Ramseur Combs of Hazard, Ky., son: Scott Combs of Thousandsticks, Ky., grandson whom he adopted and raised as a son: Monroe Scott Combs of Thousandsticks, Ky., great-grandson: Joshua Scott Combs, one step-son: James Combs of Knott Co., Ky., one brother: Roland Combs & wife, Joyce, of Wooton, Ky., one sister: Izena Melton & husband, Benny of Wooton, Ky. Monroe also leaves surviving a host of other treasured relatives and friends.
